Giving shoppers the ability to pre-order games based on the stock that would be available meant playtesting the app through many different stages to make sure the user experience would be as simple as possible while meeting shoppers' needs. Seeing as this is a new app on the market, this project required a lot of ground-up rethinking to make the user journey short and fulfilling.
Goals
User: Preorder games and register for upcoming events
Business: Increase opportunity for preorder sales and event participation
Product: Create a simple but appealing app
Design Process
The community surrounding local game stores is the most crucial part of the success of these businesses. The most complex part about designing the preorder feature was addressing all the potential error states that can occur during a purchase. To ensure that shoppers can complete purchases without delay, concise copy and clear visuals were used to help get an understanding of what was happening at each step.
Research
To make sure features worked the way shoppers want, four rounds of user testing took place with iterations based on feedback. Shopper expertise and insight proved crucial during testing.
There are a lot of services that local game stores lack that were determined by surveying shoppers and analyzing a competitive audit. Some features that were the most requested are pre-order options that show stock or that more stock can be ordered on purchase, a calendar for events, a way to register for events online, and order games for in-store pickup.
